The Linford Barrows
The Linford Barrows are situated above Cairncastle in the Knockdhu Hills. The site lies in the town of Linford, hence its name. The area offers exceptional views over the rolling hills down towards Ballygally village and bay and across the irish Sea towards the Maidens and Scotland.
These ancient Bronze Age earthworks are believed to be burial mounds. Consisting of two large adjacent circular mounds, each surrounded by a ditch and rampart called a ring-barrow; bodies buried below within a wooden or stone vault which was then covered with large amounts of soil to form the mounds we now see. It is thought that these structures were utilized for ancient burials and signified an important member of the nearby settlement. A type of monument to the deceased.
There is a free car park situated opposite, affectionately named locally as the ‘Car-park in the Sky.’ Begin your adventure up Knockdhu Hill. This area is also part of the Antrim Hills Way and the Ulster Way walking trails.
The popular series Game of Thrones was filmed in the area.
